Guest phone verification (WhatsApp OTP)
Why guests see “Add mobile number” instead of OTP, how “Allow guest orders without WhatsApp OTP” works, and how to require verification.
Goal Understand when Digitable asks for a WhatsApp OTP versus only a name and mobile number — and how to turn verification on or off.
Who Restaurant owner or manager in Admin.
Two separate settings
Connecting WhatsApp and requiring OTP are not the same thing.
| Setting | Where in Admin | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | | WhatsApp Business connected | Integrations → WhatsApp | Lets Digitable *send* OTP codes and order messages | | Allow guest orders without WhatsApp OTP | Integrations → WhatsApp → Guest phone verification | If on, guests skip OTP and only save name + number |
Intake controls (Open / Pause / channels) do not control phone verification.
What guests see
OTP required (recommended)
- Checkout asks them to verify with a WhatsApp OTP.
- After success they can use My Account, wallet, loyalty, and order updates tied to that number.
Unverified contact mode
- Checkout shows Add mobile number (name + phone) with no OTP step.
- Payment / order screens may show Saved for this order — not verified by OTP.
- Digitable cannot prove the number belongs to them.
Steps — require WhatsApp OTP
- Open Admin → Integrations → WhatsApp.
- Connect WhatsApp Business and confirm OTP templates are ready (so codes can be delivered).
- In Guest phone verification, turn off Allow guest orders without WhatsApp OTP.
- Confirm takeaway / online payment is configured for the branch (UPI or a card gateway). If online payment is not set up yet, Digitable may still allow unverified contact so guests can leave a number.
- Open your public menu on a phone in a private/incognito window, add an item, and open checkout — you should get an OTP challenge, not only “Add mobile number”.
Steps — allow orders without OTP
- Open Admin → Integrations → WhatsApp → Guest phone verification.
- Turn on Allow guest orders without WhatsApp OTP.
- Use this only if you accept unverified numbers (for example while WhatsApp is still being approved).
Expected result
- With the allow-without-OTP switch off (and messaging + online payment ready), guests must verify by OTP before ordering.
- With the switch on, guests can place orders after saving name + mobile only.
Common mistakes
- Assuming WhatsApp connected automatically forces OTP — it does not; the Guest phone verification switch decides.
- Looking under Intake / pause controls for this setting — it lives under Integrations → WhatsApp.
- Leaving allow-without-OTP on after WhatsApp goes live — turn it off when you want verified guests.
